2011 was a good year for Mad Max Inc., although the weather was a bit chilly and rainy we managed to raise almost $24,000 to take up to the Indianapolis Miracle Ride. As most of you might already know, “Mad Max” John Maxwell, the founder of our organization got very sick a few days prior to the Miracle Ride. He was taken to the emergency room the night before the actual ride, in Indy, and was admitted for 14 days due to an illness caused from a tick bite. But, he is back at it again this year and ready to make 2012 the best year ever!

|Meet Zane!!! Zane is one of MadMax
Ride's poster children....such a sweetie.
Zane is a 5 (soon to be 6) year old little boy. He was born on October 27,2007 at 24 weeks gestation. He spent 18 weeks in the hospital at The Women's Hospital in Newburgh. When Zane was 18 months old, he was diagnosed with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy. This was due to his prematurity. When he was 3 he stated having seizures. Zane is unable to sit up by himself, walk or say more than about 10 words. He goes to Riley Hospital every 3 months to get Botox injections which help with the muscle spasticity. In the next year he will be having surgery at Riley on his hips. The muscle spasticity is starting to pull his hips out if alignment so he will need surgery for that and he will also be
getting a Baclofen pump at that time. Baclofen is muscle relaxer which will help with his muscle spasms. He is able to feed himself finger foods but is unable to use utensils without assistance.
Zane is a very sweet little boy. His smile and personality light up a room. He enjoys going to demolition derbies, watching movies, swinging on his swing set, playing with his little brother, Zeke and little sister, Adelyn.
|Meet Zachary Howard.....
For our family, Riley Hospital is a community. "The Riley Experience" is more than just a group of nurses and doctors caring FOR a sick or injured child. It is a group of nurses, doctors, social workers, family support staff, fellow parents, even housekeeping and cafeteria staff, caring ABOUT a child AND his or her family.
Zach was a NICU baby for six months. He and his twin sister, Mackenzie, were born at 23 weeks. Tragicly, we lost Mackenzie to sepsis. She and Zach came to Riley with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a bacterial infection of the lower digestive system that is almost exclusive to extreme preemies, and she was too small to fight it. The nurses and family support staff were there to help us through. Everyone, even the doctors, took the time to check on us, emotionally. If I needed to talk or cry, there was always an empathetic ear.
The other parents also checked-in on us, but wasn't all sadness and worry. Sure, we shared our concerns with each other, but we shared in each little victory as well. It wasn't uncommon to hear "Keep us in your thoughts and prayers. [My baby] has surgery tomorrow" or "You'll be in our thoughts and prayers." Sometimes, those sentiments would also be spoken by the doctors and nurses.
